After making the finals of the 2011 Copa Libertadores, Penarol was heavily favored to be the top club in the Uruguay Primera in 2011-2012, but despite finishing second in the overall standings, the Carboneros lost out on both the 2011-2012 Apertura y Clausura titles. Nacional a club that included Inter great Alvaro Recoba as well as the leagues top prospect Tabare Viudez turned out to be the best club overall as they won the Apertura and were then led by Richard Porta 14 goals in 15 games to finish second in the Clausura. The Clausura was won by Defensor who were led by playmaker Bryan Aleman.who tied Viudez for most assists overall.
